MASS General Rules

1. Unsportsmanlike conduct. Unsportsmanlike conduct towards any racer, volunteer or team director will not be tolerated and can be grounds for disqualification. In extreme cases a racer, or racers may also be asked to leave the venue. Examples of unsportsmanlike conduct are – causing another racer to crash, lying about the class you are racing in to gain an advantage, or pass other racers. Disregarding the instructions of, or using profanity towards course marshals, parking volunteers or any other staff or volunteers.

2. For XC races bikes must be powered by human pedal power only.  No e-bikes, electric motors or any other type of power-assisted bikes of any type are permitted at XC races. Certain Enduro and Endurance-only venues may have an e-bike class.

3. Self-Supported – For Cross Country races (XC) – Racers must be self-contained and self-reliant. The individual racer must perform their own bike repairs. No outside support is permitted. All spare parts and tools shall be carried by the individual racer, to be used only by that racer; cannibalizing other bikes is not permitted. A racer can only use spare parts or tools that he/she started with at the beginning of the race. Racers may not leave the course to make repairs.  Racers shall complete the entire event on the same bicycle they started with. Racers must also finish with the number plate/timing chip that they started the race with. Junior racers may receive support and parts from others but must finish on the bike they started on.  Endurance and relay racers may receive pit support from anyone and may swap bikes, but the number plate/timing chip must be swapped as well to be scored. Endurance and relay racers may receive support on the course from registered racers only.

4. Cutting the course short by any rider, whether by accident or not, may lead to disqualification or relegation to last place in your class. The race promoter and MASS directors will make this decision.

5. Any rider littering the course with food packages or waste will lead to disqualification.

6. You must wear a helmet while warming up or racing on the course for any MASS event.

7. Food and water can be taken from anyone, anywhere on the course.

8. A racer pushing or carrying their bike can overtake a racer riding his bicycle provided that it does not interfere with the riding racer.

9. Riders passing or lapping another rider must vocally alert that rider by using such terms as: Passing on your left (right) or Track left (right). It is the responsibility of the passing rider to overtake safely, and riders being passed must yield at the first reasonable opportunity. Racers have the right of way over racers pushing or carrying their bike.  When two riders are vying for position, the leading rider does not necessarily have to yield position to the challenging rider, however, a rider may not bodily interfere, intending to impede another rider’s progress. This is considered to be highly unsportsmanlike behavior.

10. The Protest period is 15 minutes following posting of complete results for each class. It is a racers responsibility to verify his results at the race.  Protests can be made only by and against racers in the same class and in most cases must be confirmed by a third-party.   Do not contact the MASS about results errors discovered after the protest period unless it is something that was not apparent at the time the results were posted.

11. Walkmans, headphones and other personal listening devices that may interfere with a racers awareness of other riders and their surroundings are not allowed.

12. You must have an official MASS number plate with chip in order to race all XC races. The number plate may not be altered in any way that affects the timing chip or any of our sponsor logos that may be on the number plate.  MASS plates may or may not be used at certain Endurance and Enduro races.

13. Minimum distance for lap Endurance Races – Endurance racers competing in multiple lap endurance races will be required to complete the Cat 1 distance, ususally 3 laps. Failure to complete the minimum distance will be treated as a DNF and will not be eligible for cash, awards or MASS series points.

14. There will be no pre-riding or warming up on the course during any race. Racers are subject to disqualification from their race with no refund.

15. Violation of any of the rules may result in disqualification. The race director and/or MASS Directors will have final decision and interpretation of rules.   It is each racers responsibility to be aware of and understand these rules. Failure to do so may result in disqualification. Ignorance is no excuse!
